Watch The Birdy!

I rarely enjoy political cartoons, mostly because they usually try too hard, or they’re old news by the time I see them. Here’s one that particularly tickled my fancy.

Chaos in Iran

nytimes.com

In case you missed it, Iran had an “election” yesterday.  I use the term loosely, because the Iranian regime is having something of a crisis of legitimacy.  Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the reform candidate, was challenging incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and appeared to have a large amount of support, especially in the big city of Tehran.

Election day came, and Iran saw record turnout, something that was supposed to aid Mousavi.  Turns out, it was a landslide — for Ahmadinejad.  In fact it seems that every part of the country voted in exactly the same proportions.  Weird.

Understandably, people are really pissed:

This seems like a monumentally stupid decision by the Iranian regime.  The clerics have survived reformist candidates before, and the number one way to get people to play by your rules is to include them in the process.  If you lock them out, they’re just going to tear everything down.

And that might just be what they’re going to do.
