Juicy!

Show me yours and I’ll show you mine…

Or I’ll show you mine and you show me yours.

It’s no secret that I’m a blog-a-holic and an avid user of Google Reader, but I thought it would be fun if we all whipped out our…trends…and sized up.

At the very least, I’d like to know what y’all are reading; we may end up sharing a hidden gem (like The Oatmeal (double parans + semicolon; score!; double score!)).

Also, I’d like to let it be known that I’ve been somewhat slacking as of late.  I’ve been spending more time in the kitchen and less time surfing the blegs, so I’m definitely a little out of shape, and it’s showing.

So, without further ado:

    Three things:

    1.) Great idea.

    2.) I’m game – http://www.juicetheblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Rob-Google-Reader-Stats.pdf

3.) I really hate to take up the role of grammar nazi, but we actually got into a surprisingly heated discussion at work regarding the usage of nested parentheses in writing. Nested parens are fine for informal writing, but for secondary “brackets” in formal writing, square brackets should be used.

After that, curly brackets should be used.

Thanks for sharing guys. Now I have even more reading I can’t keep up with.

I do a lot of scrolling down the “All Posts” section, so I’m not sure how much these numbers really mean, but a few of the top ones are definitely favorites:

I’d love to whip it out, but I think of myself as a grower, not a shower. To tell the truth, I pretty much only go to Juice the Blog, MoneyJog (my brother’s blog) and New York Times (not a blog, but I’m addicted to the Science section). It’s good to see whach’all are reading though, sometimes I’m dying for new places to check out.

    Last but not least, Juice.

Atlantic Food Channel is fantastic. Some really good opinion stuff and articles related to food issues. Highly recommended. I’ve been wanting a real life subscription to The Atlantic for awhile now. I think they’re good people over there. I didn’t know about Gardener Cook, I’m all over it.

What can I say, I’m a staunch advocate of the Google Reader Marathon Session.

    @BriBri
I’ve never heard of Hunger Angler Gardener Cook before, and I have to say that Hank Shaw is the most badass male currently alive on this planet. Wow. Thank you for the heads up on this. (Steph’s gonna hate me :D )

I love digital syndication via RSS/Atom feeds. They serve a practical purpose for me – via a large number of security feeds I subscribe to, that place the affected program in the subject line of its entry for easy identification.

They also allow me (to steal a line from Cory Doctorow) to “drink straight from the Internet fire-hose.” I used to be a staunch supporter of non-web based RSS readers, utilizing NetNewsWire for a very long time. I still use NNW (on my desktop) now and again, as I really love its support for styles. Check out the LegiStyles collection @ http://www.legistyles.com/ to see what I mean. That shit is gorgeous.

Oddly enough, however, is what got me into using Google Reader in the first place. It wasn’t so much going through my feeds on the desktop, but rather on my iPhone. While I _love_ the interface on such native applications such as NetNewsWire for iPhone and Reeder (http://reederapp.com/2/), they just take _far_ too long to sync my read/unread feeds. Maybe performance is improved with newer hardware (iPhone 3GS/iPad), but it’s just unacceptable for me on my 3G.

So, I bit the bullet one day, and tried out Google Reader on my phone, after a conversation with Adam about the GMail interface on the iPhone vs the built in Mail application (something which I can’t budge on, for work reasons).

Wow, like wowee-wow-wow. The mobile-optimized Google Reader site is a fucking _masterpiece_. It’s incredibly fast which is primarily due to how the app is web-based, so my iPhone isn’t pulling all of the feeds, it’s just displaying them. Then again, I don’t care about how I get my feeds, I just care that I do get my feeds, and fast. Google Reader delivers on that front with an incredibly well designed web application that is blindingly fast.

It (the mobile version) acted as a gateway drug for me and the desktop-browser based version of Google Reader. I haven’t looked back. I’ve also been utilizing Instapaper a bunch as of late (great web/mobile app), and was afraid I’d miss out on NNW’s ability to send articles over to it. Nope! Google Reader supports that. And for my love of clean typography in my RSS feeds? I’ve shacked up with Helvetireader (http://helvetireader.com/).

So yeah, long gush on RSS/Google Reader, but it needed to be said.
