Really interesting talk. I’ve never heard of the Kardashev scale before, but it’s an interesting concept. I think if we ever do discover a Type II or III civilization we should probably keep to ourselves though, so they don’t enslave our sun and turn Earth into an exotic zoo. Just saying.

I also think the singularity would be bad for people, what do you guys think?

I ascribe to the exclusionary principle of AI. That is, true artificial intelligence can never exist, because we will simply change the definition of intelligence.

Before the development of computers it was determined that numbers and their manipulation separated intelligence and non-intelligence. Then the first adding machines were created. This started the trend of defining intelligence as something just beyond the reach of computers, until a computer was created that could do it. I see no reason for this trend to stop.

Beyond artificial intelligence the biggest obstacle to human development is that we die. The coming singularity’s most exciting promise (for me) is either the extreme slowing or halting of death. Imagine if the greatest minds of science were still alive, had continued developing their ideas, and mingle with today’s brightest new minds. That fact that we die off taking all of our knowledge and experiences with us is a huge impediment to our development.
