Selfish
A few months ago I was back in Boston chatting with some old republican friends. We talked business and politics. Where the two topics met, they mentioned “You may be a blue liberal now, but when your business takes off you will be on our side.”
If you are a democrat when you are poor and a republican when you are rich, you don’t actually stand for anything but yourself.

Well said. People use this argument all the time, and you’re right — it just comes off as being selfish. And in the end, that’s really what the Republican party stands for: itself. A house divided, anyone?

Well said, Colin.

The Republicans tend to be in favor of less taxes. When you look at how wasteful the federal government is, why would anyone who has built a business want to pay more taxes into a wasteful system? Republicans tend to give more to charity than Democrats, so generally speaking I don’t think it’s an issue of selfishness.
Having said that, both of the parties seem to be full of corrupt politicians who are more concerned with getting reelected than with keeping our country safe and financially viable.

@ Mr. Riley,
I think that what Colin is trying to say is that basing party loyalty on your wallet and not your ideals is selfish on an individual level, and demonstrates low moral fiber. I went a little out of bounds and made a claim that’s not necessarily true for all Republicans in the party (but see Fox News: Politics).
I agree with you here.
