In the comments section of Choof’s post about New Super Mario Bros. Wii, I mentioned that I was among those who were skeptical about the game when it was first announced.

It wasn’t necessarily due to the game itself.  I love New Super Mario Bros. for the DS.  I really do.  Hell it’s the damn game that got me to buy a Nintendo DS.

What got me skeptical about this pseudo-sequel for the Wii was the mention of a “demo play” feature that would debut in NSMB Wii.  I wasn’t able to find any articles that showed the correlation of this new “demo play” feature with NSMB Wii when I made my original comments, but I can now.

Seek and you shall find,

With “death panel” rumors abound, it far past due to have a simple explanation of what the health care reform proposal on the Hill is all about.  Enter Nick Beaudrot:

3831797463_96b4911b4c

When put into this context, we can see that the nefarious public option is relatively minor in scope.  The real big reforms are the added consumer protections, coupled with employer mandates and health care exchanges.  Not to say that the public option should be dropped, because I think it would be a significant upgrade to the system, but I wouldn’t want a bill to get killed simply because it didn’t contain one.

Having said that, it becomes even more clear that all those grannies out there have nothing to fear, because there will be no change to Medicare.  That is, there’s no change anymore, now that expanding Medicare benefits to cover end-of-life counseling has been stricken from the bill, because that was obviously unacceptable.

On a much larger note, it blows my mind that a political party can be continued to be taken seriously after knowingly and maliciously lying to the American people.  In this particular case, lying to little old ladies.

These people cannot be allowed to shape policy in this country.  It’s time to boycott the GOP and completely shut them out of the legislative process.  I have no interest whatsoever in bipartisanship unless both sides are acting in good faith, and it’s clear that the GOP has no intention of that.

Republican Party, you’re dead to me.

Saw this when it was played on This American Life – Live!, but never knew it was put up on Vimeo.

I love that Andrew Bird song that the short is accompanied by.

And Chris Ware just rocks ass on all levels.

Here’s some footage of the New Super Mario Bros. game that’s slated for release sometime during the 4th quarter in North America. Can anyone say christmas gift?

A lot of people are saying that Nintendo messed up with this one, arguing they should have developed the next generation of this series in 3D. I have to disagree with them. This game is a classic. It has a great history and an enormous fan base of old school gamers. I think giving it beautiful visuals and incorporating cooperative play is enough to modernize the game. Including another dimension to a classic platformer would only ruin the simplicity & fun of the game.

Considering that I just wrote a brief article explaining how to dump a MySQL database to a file, I think it’s only appropriate that I follow up with an article on how to import that file into a database.

It’s not too difficult to accomplish this, but for the average web developer who is used to dealing primarily with phpMyAdmin, shell commands can be daunting. I’m going to document this with the hopes that one person one day will find it useful.

From the New York Times:

Scientists in Israel have demonstrated that it is possible to fabricate DNA evidence, undermining the credibility of what has been considered the gold standard of proof in criminal cases.

The scientists fabricated blood and saliva samples containing DNA from a person other than the donor of the blood and saliva. They also showed that if they had access to a DNA profile in a database, they could construct a sample of DNA to match that profile without obtaining any tissue from that person.

“You can just engineer a crime scene,” said Dan Frumkin, lead author of the paper, which has been published online by the journal Forensic Science International: Genetics. “Any biology undergraduate could perform this.”

Bwa ha ha.

I really hope one of the writers of the CSI/Law and Order type shows reads this and implements it in some sort of crazy pseudo-science manner into an episode.

I’ve always wanted to go to Cuba.  Signed it.

Our Mission

Today, Americans are free to travel anywhere in the world except Cuba.

In April, President Obama took a bold step by making it easier for Cuban Americans to visit their families in Cuba. Opinion polls show that the overwhelming majority of Americans believes that all U.S. citizens should have the freedom to travel to Cuba. We agree.

The opportunity to end the 50-year travel ban now hangs in the balance. We must seize this moment and speak with a powerful, united voice. Join us in urging U.S. leaders to give all Americans the freedom to travel to Cuba.

So some people here may have seen District 9 this past weekend.  I did, and was pleasantly surprised and entertained.  The director of District 9, relative newcomer Neill Blomkamp, was essentially given the chance to do District 9 as a consolation prize after he (and Peter Jackson) were denied the keys to the Halo movie.

Needless to say, I think they (and we, as a generally video game playing, science-fiction loving collective audience) got robbed.

Oh the Squalo Halo movie we could of had.

So I’ve been addicted to another iPhone game as of late. This time, it’s from the the fellas at Tiger Style (including former Thief designer, Randy Smith).

The description for the game is as follows:

You are a spider. One afternoon, you discover an abandoned mansion. Where is the family who lived here? What happened, and why did they leave? Search for clues as you adventure from room to room on the hunt for your next meal.

The official trailer is included above, but let me give you some of my initial impressions.

The game itself has a pretty illustrated style, and the music isn’t bad either.  The gameplay is the real draw of the game, though (as it should be).  Controlling Mr./Mrs. Spider (you have the option to change the name of the spider from the default “Leggz”,  I’ve named mine Tim) is a breeze, and feels intuitive.  Placing your finger on the right side of the screen moves the spider along to the right of the perimeter of whatever it’s on (placing your finger on the left does the opposite).   Swiping across the screen sends the spider flying in whatever direction you swiped.  Tapping on the spider, then swiping, sends the spider flying with a web-strand trailing behind.  To form a full web, you have to form an enclosed shape from the aforementioned web-strands.

There’s a combo system within the game where you score more points by eating the bugs caught in your webs and moving from web to web without touching the ground.

Supposedly there’s a semi-hidden story in the game revolving around the abandon mansion’s former tenants, but I’ve only seen bits and pieces of that story so far.  I’ve run into hidden love letters in containers above the shower, old boxing trophies, and other kitschy items indicative of what the former tenants were up to before they packed up and “got out of Dodge”, if you will.

I like the game, and maybe you will too (for only $2.99!)

According to this report, Microsoft is no longer able to sell “Word 2007.” The reason this time is patent infringement.

The patent being disputed is from this jackass company, i4i inc. I only call them a jackass company because the patent is another one of those common sense ideas that someone was hoping to bank out off of without doing any real work.

Here is the general context of the patent: Method and system for manipulating the architecture and the content of a document separately from each other. Yep. So Microsoft has broken the law in its DOCX format that uses XML to describe the layout of its content and the document itself.

I feel frustrated by this. Also, Beej, maybe its time we through some patents down on some common sense practices. 3D on the web? Nah too general. How about … 3D on the web doing medical things? Sounds patentable to me.
