3D Geolocation
I don’t often cross-post, but I felt like this sort of stuff would be interesting to you Juicers. A lot of our little demos at Darkwind Media have been very small, just tech demos, or related to some obscure topics. This time, I think we have something that you might like.
The application does geolocation on data gathered from the net. It then plots it on a 3D explorable, interactive globe. Here’s the post on our blog: http://darkwindmedia.com/blog/2009/08/26/geolocation-in-3d/
We have regular HTML pages and RSS feeds able to be visualized so far. However, we feel like this is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much more data out there that can be viewed in this way. We’ll definitely be updating this application with more capabilities. What do you guys think of this kind of visualization for data?

Honest to goodness I’m not trying to be a dick, but with regards to RSS mapping on a globe isn’t this essentially the same as what the Wii News Channel does, albeit in higher resolution?

PS. I still think that looks cool as hell, and with the design chops y’all have in DWM, I think you guys could probably one-up Nintendo here.

Yeah it looks pretty neat. That’s very similar. Actually, I didn’t set out to make an RSS reader. But, while setting up the geolocation stuff I was looking for easy access to geo-tagged data. News was the first thing I thought of and it was easy to integrate. The ultimate idea we had was the twittr geolocator.
The RSS reading will probably be just one type of data we’ll have available. We’ll definitely try to make the navigation as slick as possible.
