Well, the wait is over, but my worst fear has been realized.  SlingPlayer mobile is here for the iPhone…with no 3G support:

After what has become one of the longer (and certainly one of the highest-profile) App Store approval delays, SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone has finally gotten Apple’s blessing — with some serious changes under the hood. Most importantly, 3G access has been disabled, meaning you’ll only be able to get your Sling on over WiFi — a serious blow to the app and a huge change from the way SlingPlayer Mobile works on other platforms — and likely a verification that either Apple or AT&T took serious issue with the bandwidth load imposed by this type of app on the HSPA network. Despite the restriction, Sling will be charging a whopping $29.99 for the download; in exchange for your troubles, though, they’ve decided to lift the ban on older Slingboxes, with the caveat that they won’t be officially supported if you run into trouble.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Anybody want to buy a SlingBox?  I don’t want to own one if I can’t use it on my iPhone over 3G.

On a broader note, there’s a serious bandwidth issue in the United States.  In the age of the internet, I shouldn’t have to suffer through sub-par products because AT&T sucks at life and is worried about their bandwidth.  Grow some balls and pony up the money to make a legit network, and maybe people won’t bitch and moan all the time.

Meanwhile, in Japan, wireless companies are gearing up to deploy their 4G networks…

So I’ve started planning our honeymoon to Hawaii, and today I came to the rental car portion.  And with that comes the age restrictions.  Luckily, I’m not totally locked out of the rental car market, but since I will be 24.75 years old when I rent the car, I will be subject to an “underage fee” that amounts to roughly 100% of the cost of the rental.

Now, at first glance this may seem legitimate.  Like car insurance, us under-25′s are forced to pay higher rates due to the higher likelihood that drivers in our age-group will drive recklessly and get into accidents.  But upon further inspection, this explanation doesn’t hold water.

Insurance products are based on risk.  I pay a firm a fee to pay me if some unlikely event happens.  Naturally, the fee I pay is proportional to the likelihood of the event occurring and the size of the payout.  When I rent a car, however, I am not buying an insurance product.  I’m buying the rights to use a motor vehicle for a specified period of time.  Granted, the issuer of the car takes some risk as to whether the vehicle will come back in the same condition, but they are not selling a product in regards to this.  If I wreck the car, I have to pay for it.  This is not the case with insurance; in fact, it’s the exact opposite.  If I wreck the car, the insurance company pays for it, which is why it’s in their best interest to understand the likelihood of the event.

What the rental car industry is doing is basically like a hotel charging you 50-100% more per night because you are under-25 and, therefore, more likely to trash the room.  This would be insane.

Furthermore, I’m still paying extra for insurance for the rental car.  The higher-priced insurance I pay for my own car extends to any rental car that is used for less than 31 days.

What’s really going on here is that usage rates for people under-25 for rental cars is probably pretty low.  This means that this demographic is not a significant portion of the rental car customer base, and they can afford to drive the bulk of the demographic away with ridiculous fees.  On the other hand, it’s fairly difficult to travel to a car-based island by airplane and not rent a car, so when these under-25′s really need a vehicle, they’ll bend over and take it because they have to.  This is far from legitimate and is usually called price gouging and/or discrimination.

I’d be up for a compromise that forced under-25′s to have suitable insurance that would cover them in an accident, but a 100% surcharge is completely ridiculous.

Salt Lake Tribune:

In its damning totality, the memorandum is an indictment of Bybee himself, evidence that he is morally, ethically and legally unfit to serve on the federal bench. His continued presence there is an affront to the integrity of the judiciary, to a nation founded on laws and ideals protecting human dignity, and to all Americans who once believed their government would never indulge in the same human rights violations we have long condemned in other countries.

Bybee, a graduate of Brigham Young University and its law school, should show himself capable of better judgment — and of remorse — by resigning his lifetime appointment. If he does not, Congress should begin impeachment proceedings to force him from the bench.

Ouch.

Yglesias points to a flow chart by Dave Alpert:

This is a particularly awful syndrome here in Phoenix, which has done absolutely nothing to curb sprawl.  This reminds me of another graph I saw on Yglesias’s blog a while back:

This is why I can’t understand when people complain about the cost of transit projects.  The fact is, the cost of transit projects is utterly dwarfed by how much we spend on highways every year.

American cities, particularly in the West, need a serious renovation, and the backbone of these improvements needs to be good transit.  Otherwise, we’ll be stuck in a car-based society well after our beaches flood.
