Rochester Time Warner Customers: You Have Options
Some good news from the free market:
StoptheCap! has learned that Frontier Communications will officially pull the rug out from under Time Warner and announce it will not be imposing any usage caps or rationing plans in the metropolitan Rochester (area code 585) service area, giving the DSL provider a potential competitive advantage in the area. The company still reserves the right to revisit the matter should their network be completely overwhelmed, but company officials also stated that they are fully equipped to handle the traffic they are getting now.
H/t to Morgan for the research.

Yeah, once I found out about that it was a pretty much a given I’d be switching over to Frontier…but the only problem with DSL is…if you’re not within a certain distance of the closest switching station (I think it’s like 5 miles, but I’m not 100% on that), then you’re not eligible for service.
I haven’t looked for my current apartment as I’m moving out in August (same month the caps will tentatively kick in), but man it sucks that one of the main criteria for a new apartment will be if it’s within good distance of a switching station (the distance you are within it also helps determine the quality and speed of your connection).
It’d be lovely for Verizon to be around, but they’d have to either full out BUY Frontier, or get some kind of deal with them. And as far as them being equipped to handle the traffic they’ll be getting?
…Well lets just say I have my doubts.
